Trans Research Opportunity

Hello

I am a 6th year PhD Candidate and Instructor from the Dept. of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Stony Brook University, NY who is currently working on my dissertation. I am also an out queer trans woman. My research studies the critical mutual relationship between social spaces and those who can access it, specifically the constituting associations between all-gender spaces and trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming and queer populations. As such, I would like to invite you to participate!

Accessibility and utilization of public social spaces offers users important validating and legitimating endorsements. How all-gender spaces act as sites of dissidence and new knowledge-production by amplifying queer identities within and beyond its borders becomes all the more imperative in binary-gendered societies that rely on surveillance projects and institutional enforcements. This qualitative research progressively foregrounds traditionally marginalized voices of gender and sexual minorities to intervene in ongoing academic studies, social movement discourse, and public policy debates.

I am seeking self-identified transgender, gender nonconforming, nonbinary, and/or queer individuals who are 18+ years and have regularly used either all-gender public restrooms, LGBTQ+ community centers, or have participated in self-identified queer sex parties. Each one-on-one interview will be conducted online via a secured Zoom session and is expected to last approximately 45 minutes, during which time I will invite you to share your thoughts on your gender and sexual identities and experiences of utilizing any of the aforementioned spaces. All interviewees are asked to read through and sign the study’s Informed Consent Form and are accorded strict anonymity. There is no monetary compensation for participating in this study.

This research has been granted ethical approval by the Institutional Review Board of Stony Brook University.
